Why do I do what I do ?
Since they appeared, humans have been doted with an amazing evolutionary instrument - the human brain, that allowed us to non only live and survive the natural selection, but it also gave us other features that provided us an edge on all other species: emotions, worth, feelings... Then, men gave everything a worth or a money value and wanted to own lands, animals, plants, even human beings (slavery). As a result, we no longer abided by the 'survival of the fittest' rule, but rather by 'survival of the richest'. Indeed, in order to thrive, humans multiplied exponentially and exploited (to the extent of exhausting) resources, which caused a major alteration in our planet (modification of the atmosphere, climate change, species extinction and biodiversity erosion, pollution...). Selfishness and avidity for money not only had an impact on natural resources, but it also blinded us into indirectly killing our own race (pesticides, preservatives, chemicals that we use in our ordinary lives that take an ultimate toll on us and cause cancers or other diseases). Now the next question that contemporary thinkers try to answer would be: is it a good or a bad thing? When a minority of people tries to prove that what we call 'improvements and innovation' is actually 'regression and worsening' simply because we have no idea what their consequences on us or the environment are in the long run, a great majority of human beings keeps developing and growing, not caring about the environment.
However we need the environment. We need all animals, all plant species and all inorganic things. For example, is a mosquito important? 99% of the people I asked answered me: 'Of course not, it bites, so we should get rid of it!'. Well, my reply to them was: 'first off, mosquitoes may bug you but they are indirectly important, because if they came to disappear, a lot of birds, spiders and other predators might disappear as well, increasing the population of pests that destroy crops that we eat. Second off, stop thinking that something is important or not, is worth more than another, is beautiful or ugly. If they exists, all things are important and connected, nothing is worth more than another, and even the ugliest slug is beautiful.'
My work motivation is that we certainly cannot erase the things that we did and go back to more archaic and difficult times when artificial matters or money did not exist (most people wouldn't allow it anyway), but we can certainly do something about what's happening in our world and change in a way that all natural things are put at the center of our preoccupations, since it is the essence of our lives. Let's try to educate people more about the benefits of natural enemies in our fields, or the advantage of what an unsuspected animal or plant can bring. Let's attempt to protect, respect, save, live with, coexist and have the minimum impact on the ecosystems of our planet. This battle for sustainable development and the prevalence of ecology against economics may not be won, but isn't it worth fighting for?
